Rubys
This installation represents the female body in all its glory through the manipulation of mini
female torsos named ‘Ruby’. Ruby represents the expectations of women in society,
highlighting inequality, objectification, and inferiority issues. The mini Rubies are the
constructed visual symbols of an embodied dialogical experience which explores experiences of the 21st-century woman in the local community.
Each woman had their own Ruby to manipulate to their own desire whilst discussing women’s role in society. They were free to do as they wished with their own Ruby, symbolising that no woman should have to be forced into one stereotype.
Summerhayes invites the audience to manipulate their own Ruby whilst listening to the dialogue that was recorded during these feminist conversational experiences, thus forming a relationship between the dialogue and the materialistic form of the Rubies, and challenging the female norms today.
